Motorcycle Road Safety Roadshows came to 5 cities across Scotland in Feb 2025

Speakers
Mick Pumfrey
Mick will be the compere for the Roadshows and will be presenting ‘Advanced Training for Motorcyclists – who, what, where and why?’
He is a Volunteer National Observer with IAM RoadSmart. He’s now in his 3rd year of supporting Police Scotland with Rider Refinement North. He has ridden all over the UK, parts of Europe and further afield. An almost all-weather rider he is regularly seen out and about with friends on day tours or the odd weekender camping.
He has a passion for road safety with the goal to bring down the casualty rates in Scotland by improving self-awareness of those around him.
Currently employed as a Full Time Reservist with just short of 30 years’ service both Regular and Reserve.
Police Scotland
Inspector Ally Johnson
Ally has been a police officer for 23 years, 18 of which have been within the Roads Policing and Driver Training. Hs is currently the Head of the National Motorcycle Unit for Police Scotland which covers the deployment of all motorcyclists for all Police Scotland events including Royal Visits.
Ally is an Advanced Police Driving Instructor for cars and motorcycles and holds several other Road Patrol Qualifications including instructor in Pursuit Management and Security Escort Motorcycling.
He is a keen motorcyclist and enjoys taking to the roads during the ‘summer’ months during time away from the workplace.
“It is a pleasure to be invited along to speak with you all this week to discuss and promote motorcycle safety to ensure that in 2025 you enjoy getting out and about on your machines and to highlight how to be as safe as you can.”
Ally will be speaking in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Dundee.
Constable Geoff Smart
Geoff has been a Police officer for 18 years, 8 of which have been within Roads Policing. He is currently a Police Constable within the Northeast Divisional Road Policing Unit based within Aberdeenshire.
Geoff is an advanced Police driver, instructor and advanced Police motorcyclist with various other qualifications including pursuit management and security escort.
He is a keen motorcyclist both at work or in his own time and regularly tours on his own bike abroad with friends and colleagues.

Sergeant Iain Nicolson
Iain is a Police Sergeant with the Police Service of Scotland.
He’s been a police officer for 16 years, 10 of which have been within the Roads Policing Unit based in the North of Scotland. He is currently within the North Driver Training Unit based at Inverness.
Iain is an Advanced Police Driving Instructor for cars and motorcycles and holds several other Road Patrol Qualifications.
A keen motorcyclist, Iain enjoys taking to the roads during the ‘summer’ months.

Stevie Davie
Stevie is a Watch Commander with over 23 years’ service with the Scottish Fire & Rescue Service. He is one of the Lead Instructors for Biker Down Scotland.
His background involves driving LGVs including time in the military and as an emergency appliance driver. He is a member of the IAM RoadSmart and was a 4×4 Responder until recently. Stevie is always increasing his skills by attending various bike courses and track days. An all-weather biker for over 16 years, he enjoys anything with wheels and an engine.
Stevie is extremely passionate about assisting members of the public through delivery of courses to provide the relevant training and skills to deal with incidents, having attended countless road traffic collisions.
Stevie currently rides a Triumph Speed Triple RS and a Yamaha MT09 Tracer.
Fun fact; Stevie was knocked off his bike 3 weeks before starting as a Biker Down Scotland team member!
Eric Hill
Eric is a Principal Engineer with SWECO in Edinburgh and has worked within Highways, traffic and road safety engineering in both private and public sectors since 1991.
Eric specialises in road safety engineering and road safety audit and frequently provides presentations and organises workshop days in Scotland for design engineers, road safety engineers, road safety auditors and the police.
Eric also has experience and knowledge of the enforcement and education aspects of road safety through his involvement with Police Scotland and the Institute of Advanced Motorists.
He is Chair of the Society of Road Safety Auditors (SoRSA).
Eric will be speaking at the events in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee, and Aberdeen.
Ross Bartlett
Ross is a Road Safety Officer with the Highland Council and will be discussing the Council’s plans for casualty reduction and how you can help with road maintenance.
Ross is new to riding having only passed his test 2 years ago. He’s been building on his road experience and aims to take some longer UK tours leading to Europe in the coming years. He is a firm believer in experience and training so will be undertaking further training as time allows.
Ross will be speaking at the event in Inverness.
Ewen is the Head of Legal Support at Motorcycle Law Scotland.
His long career has encompassed working with the Police, the Insurance industry and latterly in his own Investigations Company.
Ewen has been a keen motorcyclist for 25 years and he is a member of IAM RoadSmart, having passed his advanced motorcycle test in 2021 and his advanced driver test in 2024. When not working he is often found on one of his motorcycles touring the Highlands of Scotland or Europe with friends.
His presentation, ‘Motorcycling Collisions, Case Studies and Civil Law’, will use videos and case studies to provide valuable advice and information to the motorcycling community. He’ll also be discussing the #TakeAnotherLook road safety campaign.
