Motorcycle Law Scotland
Thomas Mitchell – Partner
A graduate of both Aberdeen and Edinburgh University, Thomas joined RTA LAW LLP in July 2017 and was promoted to Partner in 2024.
Thomas specialises in claims involving complex liability issues and has a broad experience of pursuing cases in Scotland’s Sheriff Courts, the All-Scotland Personal Injury Court and the Court of Session.
As a result of his expertise representing vulnerable road users, Thomas is often called upon to appear in the media to provide a legal commentary on topics relating to this user group. Thomas has appeared on BBC Radio, BBC television and other media outlets over the years, even debating ex-MP Lembit Öpik about cycle safety on his talk show.
Thomas is a member of the Borders Group of Advanced Motorists, holding advanced driving qualifications for both a car and a motorcycle. He is also a member of the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers.
Outside the office, Thomas enjoys riding his Triumph Scrambler on a sunny day, going on long forest walks with his labrador, mountain biking in the rolling hills of the Scottish Borders and spending time with his family.
Ewen Stewart – Head of Legal Support
Ewen’s long career has encompassed working with the Police, the Insurance industry and latterly in his own Investigations Company.
He was a Detective Officer with Strathclyde Police and notably he worked in the small team of elite officers in what used to be known as the Serious Crime Squad. On leaving the Police service he took up a position as Investigations Manager with Zurich Insurance where he taught and managed a team of Insurance Fraud Investigators, travelling worldwide as a Zurich Global Fraud expert.
Ewen now supports our Solicitors by analysing cases and commenting on liability, tracing and interviewing witnesses, liaising with Police Officers, including Forensic Collision Investigators, in addition to visiting and examining collision locations, and preparing Court documents.
Ewen has been a keen motorcyclist for 25 years and he is a member of the IAM, having passed his IAM motorcycle test in 2021 and his advanced driver test in 2024. When not working he is often found on his motorcycle touring the Highlands of Scotland or Europe with friends.
Scottish Fire & Rescue Service
Stevie Davie – Watch Commander
Stevie is a Watch Commander with over 23 years’ service with the Scottish Fire & Rescue Service. He is one of the Lead Instructors for Biker Down Scotland.
His background involves driving LGVs including time in the military and as an emergency appliance driver. He is a member of the IAM RoadSmart and was a 4×4 Responder until recently. Stevie is always increasing his skills by attending various bike courses and track days. An all-weather biker for over 16 years, he enjoys anything with wheels and an engine.
Stevie is extremely passionate about assisting members of the public through delivery of courses to provide the relevant training and skills to deal with incidents, having attended countless road traffic collisions.
Stevie currently rides a Triumph Speed Triple RS and a Yamaha MT09 Tracer.
Fun fact; Stevie was knocked off his bike 3 weeks before starting as a Biker Down Scotland team member!
Police Scotland Road Policing
Inspector Ally Johnson
Ally has been a police officer for 23 years, 18 of which have been within the Roads Policing and Driver Training. Hs is currently the Head of the National Motorcycle Unit for Police Scotland which covers the deployment of all motorcyclists for all Police Scotland events including Royal Visits.
Ally is an Advanced Police Driving Instructor for cars and motorcycles and holds several other Road Patrol Qualifications including instructor in Pursuit Management and Security Escort Motorcycling.
He is a keen motorcyclist and enjoys taking to the roads during the ‘summer’ months during time away from the workplace.
Sweco
Eric Hill
Eric is a Principal Engineer with SWECO in Edinburgh and has worked within Highways, traffic and road safety engineering in both private and public sectors since 1991.
Eric specialises in road safety engineering and road safety audit and frequently provides presentations and organises workshop days in Scotland for design engineers, road safety engineers, road safety auditors and the police.
Eric also has experience and knowledge of the enforcement and education aspects of road safety through his involvement with Police Scotland and the Institute of Advanced Motorists.
He is Chair of the Society of Road Safety Auditors (SoRSA).
IAM RoadSmart
Mick Pumfrey
Mick is a Volunteer National Observer with IAM RoadSmart. He’s now in his 3rd year of supporting Police Scotland with Rider Refinement North. He has ridden all over the UK, parts of Europe and further afield. An almost all-weather rider he is regularly seen out and about with friends on day tours or the odd weekender camping.
He has a passion for road safety with the goal to bring down the casualty rates in Scotland by improving self-awareness of those around him.
Currently employed as a Full Time Reservist with just short of 30 years’ service both Regular and Reserve.
